Mental health refers to a person’s emotional, psychosocial, and social well-being. It has serious impacts on people’s day-to-day lives and can affect relationships, careers, education, and long-term goals. It is also important to recognize that mental and physical health are equally important and go hand in hand. Some mental health disorders can increase the risk for many health-related problems. It is important to address mental health and how it may affect you and those around you.
The month of May signifies many things, one of the most important being mental health awareness. Mental health awareness month helps people recognize the ways mental health impacts their lives and educates people about services available and ways to advocate. Raising awareness reduces the stigma surrounding mental health and encourages protective factors and healthy behaviors that could positively impact our mental health.
Within the workplace, mental health is especially important. With work often comes loads of stress, anxiety, and burnout. Poor mental health can negatively impact employee job performance and productivity, engagement, communication, and physical capability and daily functioning. It is important that companies and employers promote awareness and shed light on the importance of mental health and stress management.
There are many ways that companies can support employee mental health. For example, here at RepuCare we like to incorporate Wellness Fridays. On the first Friday of each month, RepuCare’s corporate staff works a half day. This is a simple but effective way of prioritizing the mental health and overall well-being of our employees.
